Some of the artworks in the exhibit are a continuation of my current series of repetitive mark making paintings while the others are part of a new series that tackles similar themes but in a more subdued manner that allows both series to converse and interact. The paintings begin as typical abstract expressionist paintings—bold color, strokes, splashes—heavily textured marks or subtle washes of paint are then applied repetitively throughout. This subverts the nature of abstract expressionism and operates as a marker of time: the past (background) and the present (marks or washes) are separate yet unified, cohesive points which chart history and reveal possibilities for progress.
