The world can be a terribly scary place, can’t it? I’m writing this from Portland, Oregon on the day after violent riots filled the streets of our country to protest racism in America. At this moment, we are safe inside from COVID, racism, and cruelty.
I remember the first time I saw the ocean. I remember the violence of the crashing waves. It was the most beautiful thing that I had ever seen. This is how I’ve come to understand the world: it is simultaneously extraordinarily painful and unspeakably beautiful.
Then there is art-making: a very human attempt at creating beauty. I’m interested in the place where the human hand and natural, awe-inspiring beauty meet. When I paint, I stitch together the pain and the beauty in my own life. By painting, I join the long tradition of creation. I make something beautiful.
